Greetings from the University of Maryland’s Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Welcome back to another exciting semester at UMD. The NAACP would like to extend an invitation to those who are not already members of such an ‘ethreal’ organization. We will be taking on many projects this upcoming year. You can help by joining, volunteering, or donating.

Now in existence for over 40 years at the University of Maryland, the N
ational Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Branch #7714, continues to strive to expand its programs and offerings to the community. The mission of the UMCP Chapter of the NAACP is to advocate, inform and assist our university community with not only dialogue, but action. Since our chapter’s reactivation in 2013 under the watchful eye of our fearless Advisor Mrs.Nacie Grigsby, the University of Maryland College Park (UMCP) chapter
of the NAACP has made leaps in bounds in forging their commitment to the UMD campus community.

Lead by President Chelsea Samms & VP Christopher Wallace, the ELITE, home to the 2013-2014 Executive Board is the year that got our administrative ball rolling and we began to be recognized for our chapter’s efforts. With the support of Mr. Bob Ross and the PG County Chapter of the NAACP, we were successful in reactivating our chapter which soon led to National recognition. Additionally, the ELITE forged the process of obtaining a tax ID number that has assisted in supporting the majority of our large scale fundraising efforts in the present day.

The presiding year of the EXEMPLARY (14-15) is where our chapter began to receive more notable recognition. Events such as the #NotJustSAE Town Hall Meeting where standing room only allowed national media coverage to capture the emotions and concerns of our UMD campus community to our Civil Rights: Then & Now co-sponsorship featuring Congressman Elijah Cummings. These events declared to UMD campus officials that the UMCP NAACP was a forced focused on change. Lead by President Kayline Anantua & VP Moriah Ray, the 2014-2015 Executive Board energized our campus community about what it means to be a member of the NAACP.

With the creation of an Activism Committee, brainchild of the EXEMPLARY, the EMPYREAL (15-16) Executive Board, led by President Ceaira Thomas & VP Yinka Ajayi, oversaw the development of multiple sub-committees, including membership and programming which allows for more community involvement and support.

At present, the EXQUISITE (16-17), have taken major steps to ensure the security of our Chapter’s future by their hands-on approach toward community engagement. Led by President Lauryn Froneberger, the 2016-2017 Executive Board brings a new perspective to the idea of social justice on the College Park campus.

Our chapter embodies the collaborative efforts of executive leadership past and present. Our organizations student leaders are unwavering in their commitment and passion for our organization.  As leaders, our students administer guidance, foster the importance of a shared work ethic and are primary examples of what strong leadership should be.
